Frequency, risk factors and prognosis of hospital delirium, and association with Dementia with Lewy body - DERAIL
Delirium is an acute neuropsychiatric brain syndrome that usually fluctuates during the course of the day, and the condition represents a major challenge for the health care system. Delirium is under-diagnosed and under-treated and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Research criteria for prodromal Dementia with Lewy body (DLB) were recently proposed, suggesting four sub-types: delirium being one of them. However, there is a paucity of studies exploring the link between delirium DLB and thus this hypothesis requires further studies.
In this study, we will undertake a cross sectional study (cohort 1) to study the frequency, risk factors and prognosis of delirium in older adults admitted to Stavanger University Hospital. The goal is to acquire new information about delirium in a large Norwegian population.
We will continue with a longitudinal study (cohort 2), to explore the potential link between delirium and development of DLB.
