CallerSim Project
CallerSim is an app to practice calling to the emergency medical service communication system.
RAKOS, the Emergency Medical Communication Centers (AMK) in Helse Vest, SKLLS AS, NKLM (Norwegian National Centre for Emergency Primary Health Care), NFR (Norwegian First Aid Council), the Norwegian Red Cross, and Trygg Trafikk are collaborating to develop CallerSim – an app to practice calling to the emergency medical service communication system.
The background for the project includes a 2020 Norstat survey, which revealed that one in three people in Norway hesitate to call 113 in emergency situations. This hesitation can have serious consequences. By offering a realistic training environment, we aim to lower the barriers for seeking help – and ultimately save lives.
Currently, there is no method available for the general public to practice emergency calls. Many people find it difficult to distinguish between situations that require calling the emergency primary care centre (legevakt) and those that are best handled by calling 113. Traditional first aid training has often skipped over the emergency call, leaving out guidance and support from AMK.
CallerSim is initially targeted at adolescences and is planned for use as part of first aid education in schools and driving schools. In the app, users can call 113 and interact with a virtual AMK-operator who asks questions and provides guidance, simulating a real emergency call. This allows users to train in a safe, consequence-free setting. We aim to contribute to increased confidence in emergency situations and strengthen young people’s understanding of emergency medical services.
The app simulates a 113 call and aims to:
- Increase the public's confidence in emergency situations
- Improve collaboration between callers and emergency services
- Enhance understanding of when and how to contact the emergency clinic vs. 113
- Increase the public’s first aid competence
In emergency situations – where every second counts – this could help save lives.
