Would you like to donate breast milk to babies?

Breast milk is vital for premature and sick newborns. If you have extra milk, you can make a big difference. The milk bank accepts donations from healthy mothers who wish to help. We can collect the milk from your home, and you will be provided with breast pump equipment from us.

Who can donate breast milk?

During the period you are a milk donor, you must

  • be healthy
  • not use alcohol
  • not smoke or use snus
  • not use regular medication
  • not have received a blood transfusion in the past six months

Tests and follow-up

The requirements for milk donors are the same as for blood donors. You must take blood tests before becoming a donor and during the donation period. We test for HIV, hepatitis B, HTLV-1, HTLV-2 and CMV. All tests must be negative, except for CMV (cytomegalovirus), which up to 70 % of the adult population has been exposed to.

The test results determine whether your milk can be used for the most vulnerable infants weighing under 1500 grams.

Safe and high-quality milk

We provide guidance on hygiene and pumping routines to ensure high-quality milk. Before the milk is distributed, we also test it for bacteria.
